Cultural Tourist Centre of S. Basilio

San Basilio

The Cultural tourist Centre of S. Basilio exhibits archaeological material found during different excavations in the Forzello Estate, materials that show the archaeological importance of the territory and that  document the history of S. Basilio in ancient epochs.

The excavations  permitted the study of part of a large village populated at the beginning of the VI century BC until the end of the V century BC by the Etruscans, Greeks and Venetians.
The village rose by the so called Po of Copparo and behind the coastal dunes, in a strategic position to control the river and sea traffic. The wooden and clay houses gave hospitality to merchants and artisans of different origins. Goods from all parts of the central-Eastern Mediterranean and from Etruria arrived here to be sent inland in the Padana Valley. During the II century BC, here the Romans built an important consular road, the Popilla, from Rimini to Adria. The locality became the head postal station, the mansio Hadriani, around which farms and perhaps a village concentrated.
The excavation unearthed some rooms belonging to a great country villa which had been renovated many times
