River flood plains

These are the spaces between the banks and the course of the river, they may be dry or wetlands. The most renowned are the flood plain of Tripoli (Life project) and the very large ones on the Po di Maistra.

Tongues of sand which separate the sea from the lagoon. They are tens of little islands which surround the whole delta. They are nesting places for seagulls, sterns and oystercatchers.
The largest and most consolidated sandbank is the island of Scanoboa, only reachable by water. There are three casoni (huts) built with marsh reed, still inhabited during the fishing season.

The lagoons

Shallow pools of water connected to both the sea and the river, and therefore with brackish waters; many of them up to the end of the fifties were above water and cultivated but later became submerged due to bradyseism caused by the extraction of methane.

A saltwater wide gulf between the branches of the river Po di Tolle and Po di Gnocca. From the scenic embankment road one may see the mouths of the rivers, the fishermen’s stilt huts and mussel farms.

Water pools, sandbars and reed groves

Pools of water, sandbars and reed groves from Bonello of Polesine until “Busa of Canarin”; a treeless countryside marked by the perpendicular lines of small draining ditches, rice fields however, unstable. At the mouth of the Po di Tolle there are reed groves, flood plains and islets covered with lush vegetation, fishing valleys and marsh birds.

Fishing Valleys

Expanses of shallow water which have been closed and controlled by man, used for fish farming and hunting.
Remarkable variety of birds present in all seasons.
