Villanova del Ghebbo

The place name, Villanova del Ghebbo was adopted in the 1500s and derives from the waterway that used to run through the area.  In this small town on the banks of the Adigetto, one may visit the parish church of St. Michele Arcangelo built between 1762 and 1800 on the site of the previous medieval church.

Inside, the ceiling depicting St. Michele and the Triumph of Virtue, was frescoed by Giovanni Battista Canal, a follower of Tiepolo.  Also present, a copy of Titian’s Assunta by Teodoro Licini and two canvases by Tommaso Sciacca depicting St. Michele and The Last Supper, on the alter and the apse, respectively.  One should not forget the oratory of Ca’ Nova of the late seventeenth century with its small baroque bell tower.  This church is a place of great devotion due to the miraculous powers it is said to possess.
