The fossil dunes in Ariano nel Polesine

Sites of Community Importance (SIC), the fossil dunes in the localities of S. Basilio and Grillara are the most Southern and most ancient strips (pre- Etruscan and Etruscan period) of the coastal submerged sandbanks or dunes. In the X century BC, the land, where now the S. Basilio church stands, had a very different appearance, marked by a rich coastal dune line. In the following ages the gradual advance of the coastal lines had not produced any significant variations. In the Middle Ages, following important events of river floods upstream, the land of this area quickly expanded and consequently the coastal line moved forward towards East. In recent times the few remaining strips of dune-land have became the object of different projects of environmental clean-up and educational valorisation.
